Manitou Springs, Colorado

Manitou Springs is a Home Rule Municipality located in El Paso County, just west of Colorado Springs, Colorado. As of the 2000 census, the city was home to 4,980 people and situated on 3 square miles of land at the base of Pikes Peak, one of the most famous mountains in North America.

The city's name comes from the two dozen mineral springs located in the area, many containing drinking spigots built for the public. The downtown area is of particular interest to travelers with its adjoining restaurants, shops, and pubs, as well as a creekside city park and children's playground constructed of unusual materials.

In the early part of the 20th century, Manitou Springs became a popular health destination for people suffering from tuberculosis. The clean mountain air and mineral-rich spring waters were part of a healthy retreat for people arriving by rail from across the country.

As reported by the US Census Bureau after the 2000 census, the town is home to 4,890 people in 2,452 households. The town's population density was 1,642.6 people per square mile. The town's median household income was $40,514, with the median family income at $57,260. Just under 5 percent of families and just under 8 percent of residents lived below the poverty line.

The city of Manitou Springs has a number of places on the National Historic Register, including The Cliff House, a luxury resort hotel that has been housing guests longer than Colorado has been a state. Local sights include Pikes Peak, a 14-thousand-foot mountain that is visible from just about anywhere in the city. Visitors can drive to the top of the mountain, or ride the Pikes Peak Cog Railway, the nation's highest-running train by a wide margin, to the summit. Additional attractions in the area include the Manitou Cliff Dwellings Museum, the Cave of the Winds, the Garden of the Gods, and Seven Falls.
