Seven Falls - Colorado Springs, CO

Seven Falls is a series of seven cascading waterfalls located in Colorado Springs, Colorado. The falls reach some 181 feet from the base to the peak, and there is an adjacent staircase with a total of 224 steps which visitors can use to climb to the top. In the late 19th century, some of the land around Seven Falls was developed as a scenic resort.

The history of Seven Falls goes back to December 5th, 1872, when Nathaniel Colby homesteaded 160 acres that included the falls and South Cheyenne Canyon. Colby would sell the property for $1,000 to the Colorado Springs Land Company nine months later. Subsequent owners would not realize much value from the land until James Hull bought the property in 1882. Mr. Hull was a naturalist who objected to the stripping of trees in the canyon for lumber. After acquiring a total of 400 acres in the heart of the canyon, Mr. Hull became one of Colorado's earliest environmental protectors.

At the same time, Hull understood the value of the land as a scenic resort. He built a road through the canyon to the base of the falls, and built a stairway so that visitors could reach the top. Being an entrepreneur, Hull also built a toll gate at the entrance to the canyon and charged visitors a fee to enter. Access to the falls in those early days was mostly achieved by carriages, burros and saddle horses. Business was good, and Seven Falls became one of Colorado Springs' biggest tourist attractions.
